LED (Light emitting diodes) is considered as one of the most energy efficient lighting. This is due to the fact that, the light that is required to power the led headlight bulbs is low. The bulbs produce more light than the other types of bulbs. The LED bulbs consist of several components. A semiconductor, anvil, whisker, two electrodes (cathode and anode) and lens are some of the main components of headlight bulbs. These components are protected by the epoxy resin.
How they work
The power enters the bulb through the anode. The electric current then runs through the whisker to the semiconductor and lastly the anvil. The epoxy housing is very instrumental in focusing the light to the desired direction. The color of the light produced by the bulb will depend on the chemical composition of the bulbs semi-conductor.
The size of the bulbs
Led bulbs are small in size. They have a diameter of about ¼ an inch. The size of these bulbs has restricted their use to electrical panels and other instruments. However, due to advancements in technology, the bulbs have been developed in order to cope with the demands in the industry. The bulbs are clustered into several groups and can now be used in many industries. They can be used in a wide range of applications including the automobile industry. Often the LEDs are clustered to form a light that properly fit in the typical incandescent sockets. The LED headlight bulbs also have diffuser lenses that are used flashlights and track lighting. This is due to the fact that, the beams normally broaden the beams of light that are produced by the bulbs. One of the major reasons why LEDs last for a long period of time is that, they operate at low temperatures. This reduces their chances of burn out.
The cost of LED headlight bulbs
Led headlight bulbs are relatively expensive than other types of bulbs. One of the things that make the bulbs expensive is their production cost. The bulbs use sapphire technology which is expensive. This cost of production is normally transferred to the bulb. You need to spend more if you need the bulb. However, the money you will spend on the bulb is worth the cost because you will stay for a long period of time before replacing them.
Types of LED lights
There are different types of LED lights. Here are some of the LED lights that you will find in the market.
Super Flux LEDs
These are LED lights that are found in large panels such as billboards. The LEDs are designed to produce the maximum amount of light. They have two anodes and cathodes to enable them emit this light.
Flashing LEDs
These are LED lights that are serving as indicators. The lights are fitted with vibrators to make them blink. The vibrator interrupts the flow of the current and makes the light to blink.
Bi-color LEDs
These are LED headlights that have two light emitting dies that are connected to one lead in order to enable them to produce light with different colors.
Disadvantages of LED headlight bulbs
There are a few disadvantages that are associated with LED headlight bulbs. To start with, the LED bulbs have inconsistent and unpredictable color. Even when the manufacturer has clearly labeled the bulb to produce a certain color, you will realize that the color doesn’t appear the same as indicated.
The bulbs also have an overrated brightness. The manufacturers claim that the bulbs are the brightest in the market. However, they use the wattage to measure the brightness rather than using lumens. This means that, there is a possibility that some other types of bulbs are brighter than LED lights. To add on this, the brightness of the bulb will decrease with time. This is due to the fact that, the voltage of the bulbs will greatly fluctuate.
Another disadvantage that is associated with these bulbs is that, the bulbs are so sensitive to voltage fluctuations. Changes in the voltage can lead to the complete burn out of the bulbs. The bulbs also have grainy light. This is because; most LED bulbs have multiple LEDs that lead to the production of little minibeams on the walls.
