If ever you need proof that power and luxury are not essential for motoring I fun, this is it. Sportscars don’t get more basic than this, but with those cheeky looks and just 948cc of raw power, Frogeye owners can have just as much fun as drivers of much more expensive machinery. The Frogeye came about because Donald Healey saw a gap in the market for a cheap, small sportscar. This collaboration with Austin used the A35’s 948 А-Series engine and gearbox, back axle and front and rear suspension.
The Frogeye (so nicknamed because of that cute front end) was incredibly basic; it had clip-on windows and external access to the boot, to cut costs.
At first the Sprite was available as an Austin Healey only, but a hefty restyle in 1961 saw the introduction of the MG Midget – a badge-engineered Sprite.
