In the class of prototype cars, the 1970 Monteverdi Hai 450 SS is nearly one of a kind. At the Geneva auto show in 1970, the Monteverdi was introduced as a competitor for Lamborghini, Ferrari and Maserati. With a magenta body, it had a V8 engine from Chrysler, which was set between the front seats of the car. The Hai name comes from German where it means shark. Likely conceived by Trevor Fiore, designer for Carozzeria Fissore, there is some question as to the actual designer as some historians say that Pietro Frua was the designer. As another in the same line, a Hai 450 GTS was made, which had longer wheelbase, trim and accessory appearance changes, and red highlights.

There were hopes for the Monteverdi models, and the manufacturer intended to create 49 of the sport cars. Unfortunately, after the two prototypes were built there were no more ever created. Bad press about the estimate $27,000 price seemed to be a deterrent to even the more serious collector as a new car usually cost $2,900. In today’s dollar value, the Hai would cost $164,309.61. Spare parts for the prototypes were found in the 1990s and two more replicas of the Hai model were made by Monteverdi and put into their museum in Basel-Binningen.

Russian car brands may not feature in many car enthusiasts top ten lists of car manufacturers, but Russian vehicles a still a force to be reckoned with. Most brands of Russian cars were developed solely for the domestic market, so they cater for the rough terrain found on many Russian roads. That means that Russian cars may not be elegant or luxurious, but they are tough, and they are designed with ease of maintenance in mind.

Russian car manufacturers were hit badly by the breakup of the Soviet Union and the financial crises of 2008, but many survived intact and are still producing cars today. The Russian automotive industry employs around 600,000 people and, as of 2010, Russia was the 15th largest car producing company in the world. The names may not be as well known as Ford or Chrysler, but here are four if the big Russian car brand names that you may have heard of.

Lada

Lada may not have the reputation the Mercedes or BMW have for producing luxury motor vehicles, but when you are reviewing Russian car brands, it is impossible to ignore the Russian manufacture that made its name exporting the Fiat 124-based VAZ-2101, and its many variations, to Western Europe in the 1980s.

Lada Vesta Cross

The key to Lada’s success was not in its swish interiors or high performance engines, but in the reputation that the manufacturer gained for producing competitively priced, no fuss, reliable cars that were built in such a way that the home DIY mechanic could service and repair them. In the 1980s and 1990s, Lada exported more than 60% of the cars that they manufactured and they were an important source of foreign currency income for the hard pressed Soviet Union. In some cases, Lada cars were bartered for other products. Cocoa Cola, for example, traded its drinks in return for Lada cars, which it then sold on to the UK market.

Production of the original Lada ceased in 2012, but the company, which is now a part of the Renault-Nissan Alliance, is still going strong and, despite western car imports now being widely available in Russia, Lada has still managed to hold on to a dominant share of the Russian motor vehicle market.

Marussia Motors

Marussia Motors were founded in 2007 by Russian racing driver Nikolai Fomenko and it was the first Russian car brand to produce a sports super car. The company produced two sports cars; the B1, which was a mid-engine, rear-wheel drive car powered by a Cosworth-built V6 engine, and the B2, which was a much more aggressive and brutal version of the B1.

Marussia Motors also became a player on the F1 circuit when they bought a significant stake in Virgin Racing Formula One team, which later became the Marussia F1 team. The team raced in the 2012 and 2013 F1 seasons, and part way through the 2014 season, and the team took 11th place in the Constructors’ Championship.

The company broke up in 2014, when several key staff left the manufacturer to work at a Russian government institute and the manufacturer then got into financial difficulties and folded. The Marussia F1 team continued on for a while, as a British run F1 team, but it too ceased to exist in November 2014.

GAZ

GAZ, which stands for ‘Gorkovsky Avtomobilny Zavod’ is a Russian car brand that was formed in 1932 after a deal was struck between the Soviet Union and the Ford Motor company for an exchange of parts and expertise. The first vehicles that GAZ produced were a version of the medium priced sedan, the Ford Model A, and the Ford Model AA light truck.

In recent years, GAZ has become best known for its hugely successful range of light commercial vehicles that it began to produce in 2010 known as the GAZelle range. GAZ now has over 50% of the Russian domestic market for light vans and trucks and over 60% of the bus market too. The company also entered into an agreement with Daimler in 2010 enabling them to produce the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter at their plant in Nizhny Novgorod.

The GAZ group now has agreements with General Motors to produce the Chevrolet Aveo car, and an agreement with Volkswagen Group Rus to produce the, Volkswagen Jetta, the Skoda Octavi, and the Sakoda Yeti.

UAZ

UAZ is a Russian car brand that specialises in trucks, buses, and off-road vehicles such as the UAZ-469 utility vehicle that was used extensively by the military of the Soviet Union and other Eastern Bloc countries. The UAZ-469 gained such a good reputation for its reliability and off-road capabilities that some off-road enthusiasts rate it over Land Rovers, Toyotas, and Jeeps.

UAZ was founded in 1941 to manufacture trucks and ammunition for the Red Army to aid the war effort following the German invasion of the Soviet Union and, during the 1950s and 1960s, UAZ produced a wide range of four wheel drive vehicles that were used by the military, police, and the emergency services.

Demand for UAZ vehicles dropped off dramatically when the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991 and the company struggled both financially and with quality. The UAZ plant was bought by the Severstal financial group in 2004 and the group has since made further investments in the Russian car brand.

In 2005, the company also began producing an SUV style car called the UAZ Patriot, which used a lot of third party parts in its production, including a replacement for the original UAZ transmission, which had gained a bad reputation in the UAZ-469.

If you have ever wondered, what does SUV mean, this should provide the answers you have been looking for. SUV is a type of car body. Is a bit of a cross between a truck and a jeep, or a van and a jeep. The SUV usually offers a significant amount of room compared to a standard jeep or small truck; four or five adults can fit into this type of vehicle comfortably. The term is Sports Utility Vehicle, shortened to the letters SUV, and can be applied to a range of similar-type cars, truck, and van type of automobile. Specifically, one description says that they are a bit like a station wagon but built on top of the chassis of a small truck. While that is an oversimplification, it gives you some idea of the space available and durability of the end result.

What does suv stand for? What makes it different than a standard truck, car, jeep, station wagon, etc. is the fact it has some features of several ordinary vehicles rather than all the features of one standard vehicle. For example, four-wheel drive as a truck might have, the towing ability of a truck (and sometimes a front-mounted winch); the seating room of a sedan sized car, and of course storage space as you might see in a minivan. Almost every car maker has an SUV model available. Some models include the Hyundai Sante Fe, Ford Escape, and Toyota Rav 4. Mid-size models include the Toyota Highlander, Ford Explorer, and Dodge Nitro. Larger SUVS models are the Ford Excursion, Chevy Tahoe, Chrysler Aspen, and Cadillac Escalade.

What does SUV mean? An SUV crossover is more of a merge between a standard SUV and a station wagon type of vehicle. Examples of this type can be found in models Mazda CX-7, Saturn Outlook, Buick Enclave, and the Ford Edge. What makes a crossover SUV different is that these vehicles will typically have the same features of an off-road vehicle, yet handle the same way a car would. Standard SUVs are built on a light truck platform, and crossover SUVs are built on car platforms. Crossover and standard SUVs both have higher ground clearance than other vehicles and larger seating capacity. The standard version starts at 8,500 pounds weight while the crossover models must be under 8,500 pounds in weight.

Bubbletops are a fascinating part of the custom-car world. Pioneered by such restyling maestros as Ed “Big Daddy” Roth and Darryl Starbird, Bubbletop cars wonderfully combine fascination of 1950s Americana with jet age fighter aircraft, rocketry, space travel and above all, the promise of the future, both real and imagined.

The builder of this amazing car, Gary “Chopit” Fioto, admits that as a kid growing up on Long Island, New York he was fascinated with bubbletops, particularly those of Darryl Starbird. Fioto’s nickname, “Chopit,” craftily describes his central customizing philosophy. After he impressed custom-car traditionalists with his new interpretation on an old theme, a chopped ’50 Merc transformed into the sleek hardtop called “Tuf Enuff,” Gary Fioto performed his unique take on the Bubbletop genre.

As per his style, he executed it’s design and build like no other: Fioto’s resulting effort, dubbed “Beatnik” after his car club, the famed “Beatniks,” is a lavender 1955 Ford-based custom he’s skillfully reworked into a Bubbletop. However, instead of lowering the roof of his donor ’55 Ford, he raised it, handcrafting the largest-ever Bubbletop custom.

In 2006, “Beatnik” won the coveted $20,000 Grand Prize at Darryl Starbird’s National Rod and Custom Car Show, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The win was a poetic one for Fioto, who read Starbird’s magazine feature articles as a youngster and chopped his first top at age 11. “Chopit” used aluminum detailing and a great deal of steel in the “Beatnik’s” construction. He’s immensely skilled in every car construction medium; he uses no written plans, and he thinks in three dimensions.

“I don’t always know what I’ll do when I start,” Fioto says, “but I can see the result as I’m working.” He’s an expert at taking seemingly disparate automotive elements and blending them to a state of perfection.

This one-of-a-kind, award-winning effort is simply stunning with its scooped, full teardrop skirts front and rear, pancaked hood, rolled and pleated pearl white Naugahyde interior and razor-like tailfins. The radical interior, complete with its aircraft control yoke-inspired steering wheel and bulbous dash pod, “Beatnik” is a wheeled tribute to the late 1950s and early 1960s – and it’s truly the work of an artist practicing his developed craft in the medium of metal.

Chris Shelton from Street Rodder magazine spoke to Fioto about the elements he feels are essential for a great chopped car. “It’s gotta have attitude. That’s what I look for when I chop a car,” Fioto said. “I look for coolness,” he added, “whatever makes the car look good is what I go for — it’s just got to say something to me; it’s got to look like it’s moving, even when standing still.”

Look closely at “Beatnik” and you can see that movement – that is, if you can stop admiring the myriad details that make this car so interesting. This success hardly evolved overnight. “Beatnik” was an extensive, four-year project. “Chopit” started by completely removing the roof from a ’55 Ford. There’s not much left of the original Ford now. “Beatnik” rides on a modified ’88 Lincoln Town Car chassis. Fioto likes to replace ‘ancient’ running gear with newer components, reasoning that if there’s a mechanical problem, it’s easier to find late-model, rather than vintage, parts.

For “Beatnik,” Fioto used an eclectic mix of Cadillac, Chrysler and Lincoln components, including the canted quad headlights. The front bumper was adapted from a ’59 Cadillac, while the rear bumper was fashioned from the front bumper of a ’58 Cadillac. The finned taillights are 1960 Chrysler. The front and rear fenders, the door skins and the entire rear section of the car are all steel, hand-formed and oxy-acetylene welded.

The engine, with its period-style six-carb induction system jutting through a large hood opening, is a highly detailed Chevrolet 350 cubic inch small-block V-8 with stainless-steel braided hoses and polished components, plus a serpentine belt system, Hedman Hedders and finned Moon valve covers. And yes, there’s air conditioning for those warm, sunny days under the big, tinted Lexan bubble, which was formed to a pattern and mold created by Fioto himself.

The “Beatnik” retains very few elements of the original ’55 Ford; if you look closely, you’ll note the cowl is still there, as are the insides of the doors and their hinges, the hood and its hinges, the trunk lock, and a few of the original trunk elements. The balance of the custom machine is hand-formed and custom-built.

“Beatnik” has received a plethora of top awards wherever it has appeared. It won “Blackie” Gejeian’s 2005 Fresno Autorama Sweepstakes Award and made the “Top 5 Customs” list at Paso Robles in 2005. It was the “Outstanding Custom” at the 2006 Grand National Roadster Show and won the George Barris Kustom d’Elegance Award. All these accolades are in addition to the $20,000 top prize at the Darryl Starbird Show and First Place in the “Fine Nine” competition. “Beatnik” took the “Roth Rageous” trophy and was the First Place winner in the Hand-built Custom category at the Detroit Autorama. Fioto’s “Bubbletop” was also awarded the American Cup, the top award at Carl Casper’s 2006 Custom Car Show in Louisville, Kentucky.

“Beatnik” is a truly exclusive custom and an inspired design statement that stands alone. Admired today, much like its talented builder, this extraordinary car will be even more highly respected in the future. It remains a fitting tribute to a creative era where a few imaginative builders tried to envision the future and succeeded in their own unique way.

Minivans have always been very popular for the simple reason that they can carry more passengers and luggage as compared to the ordinary salon or sedan. Because many families have more than 4 members, the minivan is often a preferred choice of family car because it easily seats up to 7 passengers. It is no wonder every car manufacturer round the world is keen on having at least a minivan in its fleet of vehicles in the market. The grand caravan is a popular choice that has stood out over time. The town and country is another with similar reputation.

Town and Country Vs Grand Caravan Comparison

Even more interesting is the similarity between Town and Country Vs Grand Caravan. Besides having a passenger capacity of 7, both designs have a body shape that looks very similar to the other. Looking at both models from a distance, you would be forgiven for thinking they are designs from a single maker. To get a clear understanding of their similarities and differences, it is prudent to look at the technical specifications and the accessories that each car has to offer. The dodge grand caravan especially stands out for the fold away seats that is a common feature in almost all their models. The Chrysler town and country also has occasional fold away seats in some models but what stands out most prominently are the designs of chairs that look more like those of some common air crafts.

Choices may also vary significantly depending on the exact attention that the original owner actually has in mind. Looking at the Town and Country Vs Grand Caravan Chrysler also reveals that both minivans have certain accessories that are unique to each of them. A look at the dashboards will reveal certain accessories such as cup holders to give the front seat passengers comfort when taking drinks while on the road. The arm rests on both cars are almost similar with the dodge having a slight edge over the Chrysler.

Fuel consumption is a common aspect of consideration for most car buyers. For that reason, every car manufacturer thinks critically about the fuel to mileage ratio when designing a car. These two minivans are both relatively great at mileage per gallon and it is perhaps the reason they have become so popular over the past few years. Other minivans that are also doing fairly well in the market include the Sienna and the Honda odyssey just to mention a few.

When it comes to comfort on the road as well as good road manners, both the minivans are good and perhaps the only thing that may make one decide on either is the personal preferences of the individual driver. As we get into the coming year, we should all keep our eyes on the lookout for any new features that both manufacturers will be bringing into the market.
