Named after the Italian city of Turin, the Torino name was originally proposed for the Mustang – instead it was rolled out in 1968 for this mid-sized saloon and coupe. While most Torinos were pretty unexciting, Ford did offer something to whet the appetite of enthusiasts, with the fitment of two Cobra-Jet 7.0-litre V8 options. Available from the Torino’s debut in 1968, these monstrous powerplants were officially rated at 335bhp – but in reality they put out significantly more. And underselling a muscle car’s power output is deeply, deeply cool.
The Torino brand survived through until 1976, by which point Ford had offered saloons, estates, coupSs and convertibles, generally with V8 power.
The Ford Torino is best known for its appearance in Starsky and Hutch. Their 1974 car though, was heavy and underpowered; the Torino’s good times were over.
