Electric Vehicles: What Car Companies Don’t Want You to Know

If you’ve been paying any attention at all, you’ve probably noticed that the number of hybrid vehicles on the market has increased in the past few years. An entirely electric car seems like something out of a science fiction movie, but you probably know that electric cars have been built in the past. So why aren’t we all driving electric cars today? With the price of gas always rising, it would be pretty nice to never have to fill up again. It turns out that the technology is there, but the reputation is not.

Why don’t electric vehicles have a good reputation? Because car companies have the finances to conduct incredible smear campaigns. Traditional car companies have been working together for a long time. They successfully lobbied to create jaywalking laws, which changed roads from being the domain of people using all modes of transportation (including walking) to being the domain of the car. (source: http://www.theatlanticcities.com/commute/2012/04/invention-jaywalking/1837/) And they’ve used their resources and lobbying savvy to make electric cars look weak compared to “powerful” gas fueled cars.

But here’s what you’d know if you just looked at the facts about electric cars. First and foremost, electric versions of cars have tested as fast, powerful, and safe as gas cars. In fact, in California the Tesla Model S is outselling Jaguar, BMW, Lexus, and Volvo, and other fast and powerful cars. The Tesla Model S is an all electric powered car, which means owners never have to buy gas. The Model S also has better safety ratings than  many of the top luxury sedans in it’s size category on the market.

There are huge benefits to driving an electric car, and car companies don’t want you to know about them. If you need more proof check out the movie “Who Killed the Electric Car?” Turns out the answer probably won’t surprise you. (movie info: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0489037/)
