How to Choose and Use a Car Seat for Baby

The good news is that when you go to the store to buy a car seat for a baby, it will already have passed strict federal laws that require high safety ratings for all car seats. The bad news is that you’ll still be choosing from a range of brands, styles, and be given a range of prices to think about. Is more expensive better? Rear-facing or front-facing? Don’t worry, you’ll find something that offers safety, isn’t too expensive, and that allows your baby to be comfortable each time you get in the car.

 Which Way Should Baby Face?

Until your baby turns about 2 years old, depending on height and weight of course, any seat you buy should be rear facing. This is because a collision causes everyone in the car to be jolted forwards and if that heavy head is already leaning against the seat, your baby will be protected from whiplash and spinal damage. Always check the height and weight limits of the seat you buy to be sure you’re getting the benefits of the rear facing seat.

Does Brand Matter?

There are a number of high quality brands available for high prices. There are also some cheap brands which you may never have heard of. They’ll all have the same safety ratings and if you do some research you’ll also learn that a lot of them have similar materials and features. However, for the day-to-day comfort of your baby, it may be better to get something with a bit of extra padding, especially on the straps. Most babies don’t like their shoulder straps (think about how your seatbelt feels and remember that baby isn’t used to that feeling). So the brand may matter if you consider the fancy soft straps you get when you pay a bit more.

How Should You Use the Car Seat?

Most importantly, use the car seat correctly. Read the instructions for how to safely strap in your car seat using the seat belt or built in snaps. Learn how to properly shorten or lengthen the straps so your baby is comfortable but safe. You just have to take the time to get to know the car seat so each time you use it, you can do so correctly and easily.

Later on, you’ll want a forward-facing seat or even a booster seat which can be used for a longer period of time. But for now, focus on what is best for a small baby.
