Performance
The Monte Carlo SS came standard with a 305-cubic-inch, 5.OL High Output (HO) motor. Featuring a 3.74-inch bore and 3.48-inch stroke, the engine produced 180 horsepower and 225 foot-pounds of torque. With a carburetor intake system, fuel efficiency was estimated at 17 mpg in the city and 24 on the highway. The 1987 speedometer topped out at 120 mph.
Transmission
The 1987 Monte Carlo SS models featured four-speed, overdrive Turbo Hydramatic TH-200-4R automatic transmissions. The rear differential ratio was 3.73:1, which was unique to the Monte Carlo SS transmission and axle setup.
Exterior/Interior Styling
The 1987 Monte Carlo SS was available in two similar model styles: the Coupe and the Aerocoupe. Featuring a more aerodynamically designed rear window/trunk area, the aptly named Aerocoupe also in production, and only about 6,000 were made out of nearly 40,000 total Monte Carlo SS packages. Exterior color options available to the Monte Carlo SS included black, dark green metallic, red and white and featured a variety of different pin striping colors.
