The SUV has seen dramatic changes over the last decade. For the better part of its history, the sport utility vehicle really took on the same characteristics as trucks. Often built on the same assembly line, the only real different between the SUV and its truck brethren usually was the top over the bed, a full second row (and not just a smaller super cab) and a few design alterations. The Ford Bronco had the same basic build and engine as the Ford F-150, and even the Bronco II shared design elements of the Ranger. GMC’s Jimmy and the Dodge Ramcharger followed the same suit. However, times have changed. Many SUVs are now actually built on the same line as sedans, and while designed for comfort, the vehicles pack improved fuel economy and better performance numbers than anything before. For anyone looking to pick up a race ready SUVs in the 2015 model year, here is a list of the top performers in terms of sheer speed. By the way, here is some information about what does suv stand for.

Ford Explorer Sport

The Ford Explorer is a nice entry into the fastest SUV list. It uses a V-6 to produce 365 horsepower and 350 pound feet of torque while hitting 60 in 5.9 seconds.

Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG

One of the fastest SUV models early on the list, this V-8 engine SUV uses 536 horsepower and 560 pound feet of torque to hit 60 in 5.3 seconds.

Audi SQ5

Many of these top vehicles are more or less supercharged sedans with a slightly higher clearance. The vehicle is on the list of fastest SUV models with a V-6 engine that produces 354 horsepower and 346 pound feet of torque, allowing it to hit 60 mph in 5.1 seconds.

2015 BMW X5 xDrive50i

It might not receive as much credit as the other BMW on this list, but it does sport a V-8 that pushes out 445 horsepower and 480 pound feet of torque to hit 60 MPH in 4.9 seconds.

Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT

To start out the list of the fastest SUV on the market today comes the Jeep Grand Cherokee. It comes loaded with a V-8 engine that puts out 470 horsepower and 465 pound feet of torque. All of this allows you to reach 60 miles per hour in 4.8 seconds. As Jeep is one of the original creators of the SUV, it only makes sense it would have the top spot on the 2015 list.

Mercedes-Benz ML65 AMG

Mercedes knows how to pump out well performing vehicles and the ML63 is of no exception. This vehicle actually is more powerful than the top spot, but due to a few internal lacking, it isn’t able to hold up as long as the Jeep. This offering provides a V-8 engine that puts out 518 horsepower and 516 pound feet of torque, allowing you to reach 60 miles per hour in 4.7 seconds.

Land Rover Range Rover Sport Supercharged

As one of the fastest SUV models on the market, the British Range Rover (which is actually now owned by an Indian automotive company) does not produce all that many vehicles, but the few it does are all excellent performance vehicles. This vehicle uses a V-8 engine that puts out 510 horsepower, which can reach 60 miles per hour in 4.6 seconds.

Land Rover Range Rover Supercharged

Similar to the Sport Supercharged, it uses the same engine and, naturally, receives the same basic results, going from 0 to 60 in 4.6 seconds.

2015 BMW X6 M

This sporty SUV really looks like a BMW coupe on steroids. It uses a V-8 that produces an impressive 567 horsepower and 553 pound feet of torque to hit 60 MPH in 4.2 seconds. You probably never thought you’d see those kinds of speed numbers in an SUV, and it is only 7 on the list.

Porsche Cayenne Turbo S

Porsche knows how to make fast cars, so naturally it is going to have a fast SUV. The Cayenne Turbo S uses a twin-turbo V-8 engine that moves 570 horsepower and 590 pound feet of torque. This allows you to hit 60 miles per hour in 3.8 seconds.

The quest for speed and how to be faster have always been in man’s many goals and dreams. It encompasses all aspects of his daily life- his car, career and work. It is the same for all of us, we aspire and admire those who break the limit in speed and engineering, especially in cars, airplanes and transportation. What a thrill and rush of exhilarating feeling the driver must have when he finally climbs into the driving seat or in the cockpit, straps on the safety belt, revs up the engine, and floors the pedal all the way down, feeling mother earth’s gravity fade away with adrenaline kicking in.

In the same breath of wanting to experience the top speed of cars, we also wonder- which car is the fastest? How fast could it go? What was the build and the specifications of the said fast car? Along these questioning lines we answer one of the questions presented – What is the fastest diesel truck today? Well, we do not have to look far. In fact, the fastest diesel truck was known in October 2007, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Now normally diesel is not associated with speed, but with power, cranking out torque instead of accelerating. They are built that way as much as work horses are, with emphasis on the carrying of heavy duty loads and reliability.

Gale Banks and his company, Banks Engineering, a pioneer and expert in diesel engine development that includes the drive train and turbocharging diesel cars, proved that diesel cars did not have to be big, ugly and a smoke-belching machines. At the ACDelco NHRA Las Vegas Nationals the Banks Engineering team brought out their Chevy Sidewinder S-10 pickup truck and its amazing speed, recorded at an 8.21@165 mph second timeslip in four final runs. The innards of the car were handpicked. The main power is a modified 6.6 liter Duramax V8 with twin turbos for the engine. The V8 engine was modified, from the digital fuel injection technology, and some BankSpeed performance parts from their own, notably the valvetrain, cylinder heads and an intake, which increased port flow by 25% at its highest, upped the exhaust flow to 55% and maintained a high intake swirl for effective combustion. It also included twin Honeywell/Garrett turbochargers flowing into custom 321 stainless tube headers, customized wastegates and a Banks designed nitrous system to speed up spool turbos and provide a smoke-free staging. A Bosch fuel injection system is electronically regulated to provide over 1000 horsepower with just a single fuel pump to 1800 bar fuel pressure. Banks then quoted that diesel did not have to have the stereotype that it had then- it can have a clean performance and virtually no smoke-belching. The Banks Engineering team had special support from encouraging companies including Bosch in electronics, Garrett in the turbochargers area, Lamb Components for the brakes and suspension, and finally, the GM Powertrain.

Throughout the 1960s, the Big Three American makers (Chrysler. Ford, GM) fitted ever bigger, ever more powerful engines to their muscle cars. Then the fuel crisis struck in 1973 and the US Government intervened; it ordered car makers to rein things in a bit. But this didn’t stop GM from introducing the 7.5-litre V8-powered Trans Am – the largest engine ever to be offered in a ‘pony car’. Sadly this would be the last time an engine anything like as big as this would be fitted to such a relatively small machine – but what a swansong.

Despite that massive engine, peak power was rated at just 310bhp and the top speed was only 135mph. although the Trans Am could do 0-60mph in just 5.4 seconds.

The bonnet graphic was optional, but most Trans Ams came with it. Although the bird was officially a Firebird, the graphic was nicknamed ‘the screaming chicken’.

The Pontiac Firebird is an automobile which was built by the Pontiac division of General Motors between 1967 and 2002. The Firebird was introduced the same year as the automaker’s platform-sharing model, the Chevrolet Camaro. This coincided with the release of the 1967 Mercury Cougar, which shared its platform with another pony car, the Ford Mustang.

The vehicles were powered by various four-cylinder, six-cylinder, and V8 engines sourced from several GM divisions. While primarily Pontiac-powered until 1977, Firebirds were built with several different engines from nearly every GM division until 1982 when GM began to discontinue engines it felt were unneeded and either spread successful designs from individual divisions among all divisions or use new engines of corporate architecture.

The name “Firebird” was also previously used by General Motors for the unrelated concept cars.
